One captive specimen was still alive at 28.9 years of age [0671]. Since domesticated llamas are descended from the wild guanaco (Lama guanicoe), some authors consider them a single species. Aged animals experience musculoskeletal deterioration, dental issues, a decline in vision and hearing and neoplasia [1389].
