Like most planarian flatworms, S. mediterranea is potentially immortal, mostly due to their great regeneration ability. This regeneration uses pluripotent adult stem cells called neoblasts, which are constantly renewing differentiated cells and have an indefinite self-renewal themselves, making this worm an interesting subject for ageing and cancer studies [1412].
