Mus musculusGenAge entry for Atm (Mus musculus)

Gene information (ID: 24)

Symbol
Atm
Aliases
AI256621; C030026E19Rik
Name
Ataxia telangiectasia mutated homolog (human)
Organism
Mus musculus (AnAge)
Known functions and activities
DNA repair and cell cycle control

Potential relevance to longevity and/or ageing

Observations
Cells show slow growth in culture and premature senescence, telomeres are extensively shortened in multiple tissues of ATM(-/-) mice. There is increased tumor incidence in ATM(-/-) mice.
Lifespan Effect
Not Recorded
Genetic Manipulation
Mutation
Primary reference
    Observations
Atm-deficient mice are retarded in growth, do not produce mature sperm, and exhibit severe defects in T cell maturation while going on to develop thymomas.
    Lifespan Effect
    Decrease
    Genetic Manipulation
    Deletion
    Longevity Category
    Pro-Longevity
    Primary reference
      Observations
Mice homozygous for the disrupted Atm allele displayed growth retardation, neurologic dysfunction, male and female infertility secondary to the absence of mature gametes, defects in T lymphocyte maturation, and extreme sensitivity to gamma-irradiation. The majority of animals developed malignant thymic lymphomas between 2 and 4 months of age.

      Longevity Category
      Pro-Longevity
      Primary reference
        Observations
Mice mutant for Atm and Terc displayed progressive multi-organ system compromise and features of accelerated ageing.
